For many years there were two types of headphone that dominated the market. Ones with standard dynamic drivers and electrostatic headphones. Whilst electrostatic headphones offer an exceptionally musical and airy sound with incredible details, some have found them to lack in punch especially in the deep bass.
Audeze headphones utilise Planar magnetic drivers which is basically a mixture of the two aforementioned drivers. Like electrostatics, Planar magnetic headphones use a thin film driver, however instead of the film being moved by electrical field, the planar magnetic films have thin strip magnets attached to them. A magnetic field around the conductor has electrical current flowing through it which drives the diaphragm.
This is the same technology that is used in the extremely popular Magneplanar speakers.
Though Audeze did not invent this technology (Yamaha did in 1976) they have been instrumental in popularising the technology over the last 8 years.
Audeze was founded in 2012 by Sankar Thiagasamudram and Alexander Rosson in the USA. There first headphone the LCD-1 although impressive, was ultimately superseded by the LCD-2 and then the LCD-3, both of which remain stalwarts of the Audeze range. The LCD-X and its closed-back brother the LCD-XC were then introduced to the range. These are the high-efficiency models.
Though Audeze are very much considered an audiophile brand, their headphones have become very well known even outside of the audiophile world. Because of this the brand released the EL-8 range in 2015. These models brought the Audeze sound down to a new price point and were even efficient enough to be played directly from a phone or tablet.
Audeze headphones are made to extremely high standards. Their drivers are almost impossible to damage. They use real lambskin leather for the headbands and are supremely comfortable. They also manufacture their headphones by hand in California.
Not all headphones are created equal. If you haven’t heard a pair of Audeze cans, we recommend you get in touch soon. They are incredibly natural sounding headphones, everything sounds just as it should with excellent dynamics and space due to the open back nature of the design. We have found this signature sound makes them ideal for casual listeners as well as for studio and engineering purposes. The range of customers we get buying Audeze headphones is extremely varied.
